Snoring

Snoring is sound made by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissue in the mouth, nose & throat and can be very annoying to the partner, many a time leading to marital problems. Snoring can originate from the nose, palate or the back of the tongue.

There are several causes for snoring, some of the causes are:

• Excessive alcohol
• Over weight
• Nasal blockage
• Smoking
• Allergy
• Large tongue Combination of any of the above.

There is no 100% cure to snoring. However there are several solutions, especially reducing weight, reducing alcohol intake, have an operation on nose and throat or use a device which are available to keep the nose wide during night.

We at the clinic are offering a procedure which will stiffen the palate thus reduce the snoring and it is performed by our visiting ENT surgeon. This procedure is called Somnoplasty (Radio frequency ablation) and is done under local anaesthesia so you do not need a hospital admission. The technique involves numbing the soft palate with small anaesthetic injections. Once this is done, tiny needle is inserted into the soft palate using a special hand piece and connected to the Somnoplasty machine. When the needle is in place, the machine is activated, and this causes radio - type waves to be emitted from the needle, causing local damage to the muscles of the soft palate. This damage heals over a few days after the procedure and causes scarring. This leads to shortening and stiffening of palate. If the snoring returns, the procedure can safely be repeated. There are some risks involved with the procedure like pain, bleeding and regurgitation through nose which may be temporary or permanent. You will be prescribed medication to reduce pain. Some times the procedure needs to be repeated after 6 weeks to get a better result.
